The right time to begin rehab depends on the type of surgery you’ve had. In many cases, rehabilitation starts within a few days after surgery with gentle, guided movements. Your surgeon and physiotherapist will work together to determine the safest time to begin, ensuring your recovery starts at the right pace.
Everyone’s recovery is different. Some people may need a few weeks of rehabilitation, while others may require several months, especially after major surgery. We’ll tailor your program to your needs and goals, regularly reviewing your progress to make sure you’re on track.
Each session is tailored to your stage of recovery. It may include gentle exercises to improve movement, hands-on treatments to reduce pain and swelling, strengthening exercises, balance work, and education about how to move safely in daily life. As you heal, the program will gradually become more challenging to build strength and function.
You don’t always need a referral to see a physiotherapist for post-operative rehabilitation. However, if you have a care plan from your surgeon or are accessing treatment through insurance (such as Workers’ Compensation or a CTP claim), a referral may be required. If you’re unsure, feel free to contact us — we’re happy to guide you.
